Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies designed to prevent collisions, protect passengers, and reduce driver fatigue. Standard on most new Toyota models, this collection of features is a cornerstone of Toyota’s philosophy: making advanced safety accessible to everyone. At Toyota Saint-Léonard, we believe that understanding how each system works helps drivers fully appreciate how their Toyota supports them on every journey.
This system is one of the most critical components of Toyota Safety Sense. Using a forward-facing camera and radar sensors, it continuously monitors the road ahead. If a potential collision with a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist is detected, the system issues audible and visual alerts. If the driver doesn’t react in time, the system can automatically apply the brakes to reduce or even prevent the impact.
This technology functions both in city driving and on highways, adapting to different speeds and lighting conditions. It provides added confidence, particularly in busy urban settings like Montreal.
Designed to combat drifting and distraction, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) detects visible lane markings. If your Toyota begins to unintentionally veer out of its lane, the system alerts you. When Steering Assist is enabled, it can apply gentle corrective inputs to help guide the vehicle back to the center of the lane, especially useful during long drives or in moments of fatigue.
Unlike traditional cruise control systems that maintain a fixed speed, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control automatically adjusts your speed to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. Using radar and camera technology, it can slow your Toyota when traffic reduces speed and accelerate back to your set speed once the road clears. This makes long highway trips more relaxing and efficient, particularly during stop-and-go traffic.
This feature enhances nighttime visibility by automatically toggling between high and low beams. A forward-facing camera detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles or taillights ahead and switches accordingly, ensuring optimal visibility without blinding other drivers.
Lane Tracing Assist works in conjunction with DRCC to keep your vehicle centred within its lane, even through gentle curves. It’s particularly beneficial during highway driving, helping reduce steering effort.
Meanwhile, Road Sign Assist uses a camera to identify road signs such as speed limits, stop signs, and yield signs, displaying them on your instrument cluster. This keeps you informed and helps prevent missed signage in unfamiliar areas.
Toyota Safety Sense goes beyond individual safety features, it’s a cohesive system that actively supports the driver in real-world conditions. By combining radar, cameras, and smart algorithms, TSS helps reduce the likelihood of accidents, providing both security and peace of mind. Every new Toyota equipped with TSS demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to innovation and the protection of everyone on the road.
